HAMAM (Turkish bath hause) is situated is the town center at the North end of a former “külliye” a group of public buildings that incorporated a library, a hospital, a place that fed the poor, a mosque etc. It was built between 1900 and 1902. The middle of the bath has a special marble fountain around which are changing rooms with a dome over them. On the side there are some ourch-shaped designs, through an arched door one enters into the hot section which is decorated with kurna patterns on the sides. In the west of the hot section there is a water depot and a ‘külhan’, the fire place; the inscription Turks and greeks used to live together until the 1924 exchange of poputations. The bath was in the greek district and was known as the greek hamam.After the exchange of popunlations it was used by the Turks.
Today it is still the only bathhouse in Ürgüp being the oldest bathhouse of Cappadocia. It has been home to different countres OSMAN TASAR, whose father also managed this bathhouse has been runnig this hamam with his family in the traditional way since 1976. Working hours are between 07:00 and 23:00. It is actually a unisex bath but on saturday between 12:00 and 15:30 is open only to women. Group reservations are accepted.
